The Problem with Sugar and Samuel
Well, the problem is, Samuel's body has quite matter of factly decided sugar is not on the agenda. 3 months, 2 weeks and 1 day ago I took our darling, innocent 3 year old son to hospital knowing full well he was coming home as a diabetic. Samuel had been 'not quite right' for some months. Grumpy, tantrummy, fussy with food. Hmmmmm, now
I challenge you to find a 3 year old who hasn't been through this 'phase' at some point! So, I let it slide. Then over a 24 hour period after a flu like illness it all started adding up. Weight loss, extremely wet nappies at night, more frequent wee accidents in the day and then I caught him drinking water from the flannel. I am a mother but also a trained doctor. I had some urine test strips. I tested and was horrified, devastated, in denial, petrified, very, very petrified. My son's life flashed before my eyes. His future mapped out. The complications, the life expectancy, the worst case scenarios. The absolute fear in that moment for my child's life is indescribable.
So, we went to hospital. I cried, I cried and cried some more. And then we came home and started our bizarre new journey. I had no idea how hard life as the parent of a diabetic life would be. This blog is Samuel's story.
